Position Title
Policy Associate Intern – Great Power Competition & Emerging Technologies
Internship (Undergraduate applicants welcome)
Location: Remote or hybrid (Washington D.C. preferred)
Duration: 8–12 weeks (flexible)
Compensation: $21.50–$35.00 per hour, depending on experience

Candidates based outside the United States may be offered an adjusted compensation package or, in some cases, referred to affiliated research institutes as volunteer research associates, depending on local arrangements and funding availability.

Role Overview
GC NEXUS is seeking a Policy Associate Intern to support our consulting and research work focused on emerging technologies—especially artificial intelligence—and their role in strategic competition among great powers. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of geopolitics, technology, and policy.
You will contribute to client-facing work, internal strategic analysis, and high-impact content creation. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, detail-oriented, and passionate about international affairs and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Research & Policy Support (40%)
Conduct research on key technologies (AI, semiconductors, quantum computing, etc.) within the context of U.S.–China competition and global security dynamics
Track policy developments in international AI governance, dual-use tech, and national tech strategies
Draft concise memos, strategic briefs, and literature reviews for internal and client use
Content Creation & Communication (30%)
Contribute to the drafting of policy briefs, white papers, client reports, and blog posts
Assist in developing slide decks and visual materials for internal briefings and external presentations
Support the team in translating complex technical issues into clear, actionable insights
Stakeholder Mapping & Engagement Support (20%)
Identify and organize contacts in government, think tanks, academia, and industry
Assist with the coordination of expert roundtables, closed-door briefings, and other events
Project Coordination & Internal Support (10%)
Support task tracking, meeting documentation, and information management
Help maintain shared research repositories and knowledge databases
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Undergraduate student or recent graduate in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Public Policy, Computer Science, or a related field
Demonstrated interest in AI, geopolitics, and global security
Strong writing and communication skills
Excellent organizational and time-management abilities
Preferred Qualifications
Experience at think tanks, research institutions, or government-related work
Familiarity with AI governance, tech policy, or strategic competition issues
Ability to work independently and contribute in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team
Language skills (e.g., Mandarin, Russian) are a plus, but not required
